Sheriff Reigns in Budget

Sheriff’s Budget Reduction

Reining something in to me has always evoked the image of drastic
action. As you can see from the visual aid (mine) that I lend to
this powerfully suggestive headline, a 1.5% reduction likely does
not meet your definition of “reining in” either.
We measure performance in private enterprise by profit
margins. The cost of producing the product and the profits
realized after expenses are deducted. Imagine that we
have a company whose CEO increased operating expenses by 36% and
reduced the company’s
profits by 30%. You are the chairman of the board of
directors. Will you recommend firing or retaining that
CEO?
Since taking office in January 2005, our current Sheriff has increased
the budget for the Sheriff’s Office by 36% (30 MILLION DOLLARS).
During that same time, crime in unincorporated Brevard County has
risen by 29.6%! These are our bottom line indicators. No matter
how that 30 MILLION DOLLARS was spent, it missed the mark
and failed to achieve the core mission of any law enforcement agency.
Every tax dollar spent by the Sheriff’s Office should accomplish
3 basic tasks.
1. Reduction of crime
2. Enhancing public safety
3. Protecting our quality
of life
Anything else is wasteful spending.
Every 4 years we make a recommendation whether or not to retain
our elected officials and if not, who is the best choice
to replace them. On August 26 and November 4 tens of thousands of
Brevard County’s
voters will weigh in on that decision on many national, state and
local elected officials. The Sheriff’s race will be one of
many important local decisions you will be making. Local government
touches your lives every day. It’s time for all levels and
branches government to return to the basics. It’s time
for your Sheriff’s Office to return to the business of fighting
real crime. Elect Gary Young for Brevard County Sheriff
and get the services you need at a budget you can afford.
